  • Kyle Lamb

Kyle Lamb is a Committee member, joining the Committee at the second Annual General Meeting in April 2000.

Welcome Kyle. We're standing at a well-stocked bar. What are you having?
A Guinness - preferably cold, suitably poured and settled. Otherwise, I drink coffee by the gallon, whilst I prefer coke (ADSA, FarmStores 19p per 2litre bottle) during the day and at meal times..
How did you get involved in CUT and why?
I first found cut on the web while researching for a column around similar lines, encouraged by what I saw, I signed up immediately as a paying member. Fearing the closure of CUT at the April 2000 AGM, and my deep moral support towards the campaign personally, and after following their progress over the previous eight months - I put forth myself for election as a committee member...
What is your current occupation (or would be if you could get the job you're after)?
Occupation, well, I’m self-employed as a project manager, consultant, magazine editor, software analyst & designer, technician, website & graphic designer, counter assistant, treasurer, secretary, cleaner, purchaser, etc... (as self-employed implies, I cover for all staff, and all work that isn’t finished by 5:30...) Whilst also studying towards a degree in Software Engineering.. The job I’m after: ‘nine till five thirty’, otherwise known as a holiday ;)
    What is your dream occupation?
I like to manage IT or technically related construction or renovation projects... In the future I’d possibly like to train in project or business management. I’m the sort of person who would design and build my own house.
What's the proudest moment or achievement in your life to date?
The Chief Scout Award, and my involvement in Scouting, whilst also striving and achieving a Distinction Grade Advanced-GNVQ in Business.
Do you currently have unmetered calls to the Internet? What do/would you find them most beneficial for?
Yes, communicating and sharing information, collaborative working, preliminary research...
What's the most pointless sport in the world?
Any sport not enjoyed by the participants.
What's the most likely thing to make you laugh?
Well anything really, I’m always light and cheerful. Although, I particularly enjoy live stage performances, theatrical, comical or otherwise...
What's the most likely thing to make you get up on your soapbox?
People or businesses who don’t even have the decency to listen and take a view into consideration - particularly when there are many with the same view or belief. Sales persons who lie to their customers to make sales. Industries, people or governing bodies that artificially hype prices directly or indirectly. Businesses or people that don’t, or refuse to recognise our statutory rights, due often to contractual clauses or company policy. I could go on an on, I judge things based on my moral understanding of what is right, and therefore what is not right and must be wrong or unjust.
Where do you see the Internet being in 5 years time?
Pah, you could write a book on that title. I see it becoming a central point, available almost everywhere, for working, trading, education, entertainment, etc. whilst our permanent or rather unmetered connectivity is seeming integrated everywhere... voice & video mail becoming ever more familiar. E-mail addresses replace telephone numbers, physical addresses, credit card numbers, identification, etc. - single point of call for all people/roles/organisations and mediums of communication.
Where do you see the telecommunications industry being in 5 years time?
Unrecognisable from what we known of today. Again, you could write a book on it...
If you were at a dinner party, who would you most like to be sat next to and why (living or dead)?
Simon Herman Why, his book inspired my interest in business management.
What do you read in the bath?
I don’t read books in the bath - my books don't float.
Does Finnegans Wake by James Joyce make any sense to you?
    What's that?
If the UK telecommunications industry was an animal, which one would it be?
A weasel - a small carnivorous mammal with short legs and elongated body and neck.
What is the most useful/valued/indispensable piece of technology that you possess?
My watch - we place so much value to time in this society.
    Do you like marzipan?
Oh yes, especially as part of a rich alcoholic fruit cake.
If the aims of CUT are realised, would there be anything else you would feel equally worth campaigning for? If so, what?
£1,025 pa tuition fees now charged to university students.
What CDs/LPs/tapes are currently stacked upon/against your Hi-Fi?
Television theme tunes/sounds/music, particularly all the music created for the Star Trek series (genre ‘Modern Classical’), many classical box sets, and NOW 29 - 43 (Chart music)..
Who is the most underrated band or musical artist in your opinion?
I like music that has a good stereo (dolby) composition, I don’t care for bands or artists...
There's a pile of Smarties of all colours in equal reach. Which do you take first?
Indifferent, the nearest one. My favourite colour scheme is pastel: cream(buff), skyblue, purple, pink, etc...
A mischievous angel gives you the opportunity to throw a rotten tomato at anyone or anything in the world every day for a year. Who or what do you choose and why?
Chris Evens ‘GOTYAH’ - I'll use my tomato for fun, not spite. One of a few British millionaires who still knows the meaning of fun..
We have a time machine on standby. It can go forwards or backwards but it's a one-way trip. Do you want to use it and, if so, where will you go?
Year 5000 please, why, by which time the world would either have turned around and become a pleasant idealistic place, or the world will be inhabitable.
Well, the bar is closing now. We have every method of transport at your disposal. How would you prefer to get home?
Hang glider, there is nothing more rewarding and exhilarating, you fee in control, and on top of the world.
