London, 20 October 1999 For immediate release CUT hopes for swift action from E-Minister Representatives of the Campaign for Unmetered Telecommunications met the E-Minister, Patricia Hewitt on Wednesday 20th October, at the DTI. They received a warm and positive welcome and discussed a range of issues surrounding the cost of Internet access. Ms Hewitt agreed that the unavailability of an option of an unmetered tariff for local telephony is a serious barrier to the development of e-Britain. She wants to see the Internet develop further and faster in Britain than currently. Overcoming the barriers to this is high on the Government's agenda for forthcoming meetings with BT and Oftel. Following these meetings, she will decide what else the Government must do to drive that agenda forward. The Minister hopes for further constructive meetings with CUT.
