Campaigners praise Telewest's SurfUnlimited unmetered tariff London, 14 February 2000 For immediate release The Campaign for Unmetered Telecommunications (CUT) strongly praises Telewest, together with Cable Internet and MSN UK, for bringing to fruition the SurfUnlimited tariff [1] available from today. SurfUnlimited gives millions of people living in areas cabled by Telewest the option of unlimited unmetered Internet access from their computers for between £10 and £20 per calendar month [2]. Alastair Scott, Moderator of CUT, commented: "SurfUnlimited is the sort of tariff we have been campaigning for for eighteen months. At last people can use the Internet without worrying about call costs no matter when they dial up, and at last there is an unmetered tariff provided directly by an established telecommunications operator, thus 'just there'. We hope that SurfUnlimited provides a benchmark for other cable operators. It seems that Telewest has realised that the way to encourage people to sign up for relatively expensive but technically superior services, such as cable modems, is to first build up their customer base with a cheap but worthwhile offer. As for the proposed BT Surftime tariff, which looks as though it will cost at least £35 per calendar month for unlimited unmetered access, we believe it to be hopelessly undermined. In fact, we see no reason for anyone living in a Telewest area to even consider BT Surftime irrespective of what form it finally takes." Notes 1.
