Metering saved in the Philippines (24 January 1999)

The Filipino long distance telecommunications carrier, PLDT, often described as 'the bully', was trying to implement metering in May 1999; currently calls are unmetered, and are very popular that way. The Filipino campaigners, who had even got a parody site going, got in touch with us a few months ago. We told them, among other things, to 'steal our site': the wider good arguments are spread the better.

They won.

Rather than explain why they won, have a look at today's news items in The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and The Philippine Daily Enquirer.

The arguments used by the Filipino government to strike down PLDT are ... stunning. Could you imagine OFTEL saying what they've said?

The campaigners aren't finished; their final objective is to have unmetering embedded in law so that PLDT can't try again ...
