Final Report from America (23 September 1999) Tom Long, who was visiting the UK for a year on a fellowship to study telecommunications regulation, has returned to the USA and produced Great Expectations for Telecoms Competition: Lessons from the UK, his final report. He met us several times and produced excellent work to further our aims such as An American Mythbuster and a submission to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade and Industry Enquiry into Electronic Commerce, but his final report, written in a popular style, is by far the longest and most detailed and, bluntly, is constructive though damning about UK telecommunications regulation. We will be giving copies of Great Expectations ... to those who could benefit from reading it as we meet them. Furthermore, we hope that members of OFTEL, the DTI and past and present Governments may consider that, just possibly, they have got regulation largely wrong and that those who are not for us are against us is not an attitude that will put things right.
