Apology (22 November 2000)

We apologise for the site being unreachable for almost a week; our hosting provider had two catastrophic hardware failures while moving our site, and many other commercial and non-profit sites, to a new server.

The hardware problems are now solved and the move completed. Before the move there were intermittent problems reaching our site; we hope that they will be no more.

Sadly, about five weeks of discussion forum postings and three weeks of Guestbook entries and pledge signings were lost as a result of these problems; our mailing list and IRC continued unaffected.

But, no matter whether or not the site is available, our work goes on as you can see from the dates of what we have recently posted.

As an aside, you would be amazed at the number of people who told us they thought there was nothing wrong at our end despite the long outage. They assumed that their Internet Service Provider, rather than our hosting provider, was the source of the problems; that fact is probably more eloquent than anything we could say about the current state of affairs in the United Kingdom.
