Two new lists (14 April 1999)

The [c]ut mailing list has become a great success over the past few weeks with dozens of people contributing, many useful points of view being raised and a multitude of discussions sparked off.

One thing that amazes me (Alastair) is that the two thousand plus participants in the BT ADSL trial have no central forum (supplied by BT) for communicating with one another and, even more surprisingly, nobody has set anything up!

As there's a tremendous amount of interest in ADSL, and one of the committee members is on the trial - so we've seen the future and it works - we've decided to set up an [adsl] mailing list on our own server for the trial participants and anyone else interested to discuss problems, issues, solutions and anything else concerning ADSL and the trial. No doubt BT would like what goes on to be kept within the family, and one of our unwritten aims is 'down with secrecy and compartmentalisation' ...

Similarly, with NTL cable modems only weeks away and the other cable operators following behind, news of what's going on there needs to be spread far and wide. So we've also set up a [cable] mailing list for those who have, or think they'll soon have, a cable modem, and anyone else interested.

To subscribe to either list go to our new and minimalist site, bigpipes.

(And, before you ask, [c]ut just keeps on rollin' along for discussing the general issue of unmetered telecommunications).
