24/7 unmetered Internet access ... at a price (10 September 1999)

08004u has slipped out, very quietly, the first entirely unmetered Internet access service in this country. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, subscribers can dial in using an 0800 number without worrying about telephone costs ramping up. Cable subscribers do not have to change to BT.

The subscription fee for this service is £50pcm. This is a lot, and it must be a lot because 08004u is obliged to pay its telecommunications provider either by the minute or at a high annual flat rate for an 0800 dialup number. Such expenditure, in this case, is masked by a large monthly subscription and, 08004u hopes, advertising revenue in the future.

08004u offers a large number of other services including a subscription-free ISP with local call rates and an off-peak-only unmetered service for £25pcm.

What 08004u has done is, of course, good news, even though there is nothing for voice users and the subscription fee is unavoidably high. Now that the conceptual leap from no service to an expensive service which exists has been made 08004u and, no doubt, other people will build on what has been done.
