OFTEL consultations: your input please! (4 August 1999) OFTEL has released three new consultation documents: we have decided that it is appropriate for us to produce formal responses to them. They are: Following on from the first Access to Bandwidth consultation document , to which CUT replied with Option Zero, a second consultation document asking for comments on OFTEL's proposals for action for local loop unbundling. A review of the Universal Service Obligation. The USO defines what basic telephony service anyone in the UK should be entitled to (via BT and Kingston Communications) and who special low-cost tariffs such as the BT Light User Scheme should target and how. Particularly of interest to us, OFTEL want views on whether or not broadband Internet access should be included in the USO. A review, with a very long lead time (16 November 1999) on "Future developments in the competitiveness of UK telecommunications markets" when OFTEL's statutory price controls on BT are lifted, amongst much else.
