We let BT comment on its latest packages (3 September 1999)

BT has introduced two new pricing structures . The mandatory one appears to be BT's way of meeting its minimum legal obligations (at the moment, small price reductions) under OFTEL's pricing controls.

The first (mandatory from 1 October) implies a saving of £3.20 per year (plus reductions on national weekend calls) and gives:

  • One hour of weekend local calls inclusive per month;
  • A reduced national weekend call rate (2p/min);
  • Slightly increased line rental.
The second (optional from 1 November, and entitled BT Together) gives:

(a) For standard telephony (line rental increased to £11.99 per month):

  • Three hours of weekend local calls inclusive per month;
  • Reduced rates for local, national and international calls and for those to mobile networks;
  • Halving of the connection fee for new lines.
(b) For Home Highway (£39.99 per month):
  • The second and third of the standard telephony benefits;
  • Five hours inclusive of evening or weekend local calls per month.
We're expected to comment on this sort of thing, but we won't this time because BT's own comment (see link above) is good enough for us:
Bill Cockburn, group managing director of BT UK, said: We will be giving even better value for millions of customers. Under BT Together, customers will be able to surf the Net for a full hour on weekday evenings or weekends and still get change from 50p.
