The [cut] mailing list provides a discussion forum for all issues relating to unmetered telecommunications.

    Unmoderation

The list is unmoderated: in other words, posts to the list go straight to the list without someone in the middle (the moderator) deciding first whether the post is 'relevant' or not and throwing it away if not.

The list is unmoderated, and will remain so, simply because moderation is a good way to send the moderator to an early grave.

    Etiquette I

    • Remember that many subscribers are still paying by the minute to download posts.
    • Quote URLs rather than cutting and pasting text from Web pages.
    • Note that the list software silently strips HTML from HTML posts.
    • Don't post binary files other than PGP signatures.
    • Advertising is not allowed: this is a server policy as well as a list policy.
    • Referrals, or similar attempts to induce list members to sign up to a service, are not allowed.
    • Set up your email software to wrap lines at less than eighty characters.
    • Trim text quoted from previous postings as much as possible.

    Etiquette II

    • Try to keep on-topic.
    • If you are responding to a post, make the response relevant to what was said before.
    • Responses should have substantial content - if all you have to say is 'I agree' or 'Correct' or similar, don't respond.
    • Don't post test messages to the list: if you follow the instructions below you will be subscribed to the list.
    • Don't post (hoax) virus warnings to the list; learn to detect them instead.
    • Don't post 'I want to unsubscribe' messages to the list: the instructions below tell you how to unsubscribe.
    • If you must post an off-topic message, prefix what you put in the Subject: line with OT:.
    • By doing this others can filter such messages so that they don't see them (Outlook Express 5 example).

    Etiquette III

Please note that the CUT Committee members only speak for themselves when posting. For the Committee view on matters arising see the News section of this site.

    Software

The list runs on ezmlm, which behaves slightly differently from the more usual majordomo but is more powerful and more secure.

    Subscribing and unsubscribing

To subscribe to the list send a blank email (without subject or body) to cut-subscribe@cream.org and follow the instructions on the email you receive in return.

To unsubscribe from the list send a blank email (without subject or body) to cut-unsubscribe@cream.org and follow the instructions on the email you receive in return.

To subscribe to the Digest send a blank email (without subject or body) to cut-digest-subscribe@cream.org and follow the instructions on the email you receive in return.

To unsubscribe from the Digest send a blank email (without subject or body) to cut-digest-unsubscribe@cream.org and follow the instructions on the email you receive in return.

Keep the WELCOME message you receive on subscribing. It gives the email address under which you are subscribed: you can only post to the list, and unsubscribe from the list or Digest, with that email address in the From: field of your email package.

You cannot be unsubscribed by someone tricking the mailing list software into believing they are you.

    Posting to the list

Send your post to cut@cream.org and the software will distribute it to the list members.

Posts distributed to list members have [cut] prefacing the subject, which you can filter on.
